Technically the exhaust got fitted back in the engine stage – the four tubes leading from the engine into the bulb like catalytic converter (cat)/collector, which helps reduce emissions. Now that the cockpit has been fully assembled, the silencer can be fitted to the cat – this helps reduce the noise from the system (a bit).
Start by cleaning the thread on the hole on the side of the car with a M8 x 1.25 tap, it will probably have paint overspray in it. Do a check you can easily thread the bolt in from pack G. Other components are in an unmarked bag (hose clips, Silencer mounting bracket etc). Note that the M8 plain washers shown in the diagram are not supplied in pack G, so I used my own.
Fit the cat guard to the cat first. Totally open up the supplied large hose clips, and slide them through the brackets on the cat guard. Then slide this onto the cat. Note the manual shows it on top, like a roof – you actually want it slightly more to the side. The idea is that the cat gets very hot and this helps prevent you brushing your lower leg against it.
Now loosen and slide the exhaust clamp onto the cat, before preparing the silencer mounting bracket. Start by putting the M8 bolt and split washer, supplied in the exhaust pack G, with an M8 plain washer, through the side of the silencer mounting bracket. Then get the black exhaust mounting bobbin and fit this to the silencer mounting bracket, again using your own M8 washers together with supplied split washer and nut.
Then fit this to the silencer and secure again with washer, split washer and nut. There are no torques for these parts, just do them tight.
Now slide the silencer onto the cat. Move the silencer back and forward until the silencer mounting bracket is level with the hole, then tighten the bolt with fingers. Be careful not to cross thread as usual. You may need to lift the silencer very slightly to help tighten the bolt into the bodywork, before tightening up with a spanner.
Once done, slide the exhaust clamp over the silencer and tighten so it holds the silencer onto the cat.
